Best Essential Oils for Hair Loss – Top 5 List

Essential Oils for Hair Loss

Everyone loses some hair throughout the day. On average, up to one hundred hairs fall out of the scalp just as a normal shedding process not related to illness, disease or any other underlying factors. When those other factors are present, however, such as family history, medications, medical conditions, changes in hormones, certain hairstyles, stress and much more, hair loss is no longer considered normal and can result in extreme thinning, patchy baldness or complete baldness, in time. There is no shortage of solutions that the cosmetic industry and even medical branches have offered to reverse or lessen the appearance of baldness. But, one solution that often gets overlooked is the use of essential oils for hair loss.

The fact that plant oils are relatively unexplored in terms of reducing hair loss seems almost absurd. After all, many shampoos and conditioners already have essential oils in them, although much of the time this is for little more than aroma. For hundreds of years, essential oils uses have included providing numerous health benefits, including keeping skin, hair and nails healthy, helping potentially regulate hormones, demonstrating activity against harmful pathogens, increasing healthy immunity and much more. There is an endless array of potential underlying activity that may make essential oils for hair loss not only effective, but a safe and natural alternative, too.

It could be the fact that research is only beginning to uncover long believed properties found in plant oils. And, it could be that cosmetics and care products geared towards those with balding problems or thinning hair is an incredibly lucrative industry and nobody’s very interested in exploring essential oils for hair loss much for that reason. Regardless of the true motivations, there is not a ton of research that exists on the use of plant oils in persons experiencing hair loss. But, there is one that explored results of alopecia patients who massaged their scalps with essential oils for hair loss diluted with carrier oils. These peoples’ results were compared to those who used only the carrier oils. Just under half of all people who used plant oils in this study had some improvement in their rate of hair loss, compared to just over ten percent of persons using carrier oils alone. This preliminary study found essential oils four times as effective as carrier oils alone at slowing hair loss, although these results remain unconfirmed and will require more in depth study to validate. What were these superstar oils? They are found below on our top five list of favorites.

1. Thyme Oil: This spicy oil may help reduce hair loss in people with certain conditions or situations that bring it about, according to early research. Thyme essential oil is best used combined with a carrier oil and massaged into the scalp for this use.

2. Rosemary Oil: It is likely still unclear as to just why rosemary essential oil is one of the best essential oils for hair loss, but its stimulating effects may provide some insight. Though anecdotal at best, rosemary has remained a popular tonic for the scalp, nails and face for quite sometime, and has historically as it is today, been applied neat directly to the scalp for a wide range of disorders.

3. Cedarwood Oil: Cedarwood has been indicated as an alternative remedy for many skin and scalp conditions including psoriasis, eczema, dandruff and more for hundreds of years, explaining why it is a better known selection among essential oils for hair loss. Most people have little reaction to neat application of cedarwood oil, but combination with a carrier oil is the application method used in the above referenced study where some success was demonstrated.

4. Lavender Oil: There is little question that using lavender in aromatherapy can be calming and relaxing, and if hair loss results from emotional turmoil, diffusion of the sweetly scented oil can certainly have positive benefits. However, that is not the only reason lavender essential oil may be one of the best essential oils for hair loss as it also demonstrated some potential in studies relating to using diluted plant oils in persons experiencing hair loss. Lavender is also one of the most gentle plant oils, and can be an excellent choice in people whose skin is sensitive to other natural choices.

5. Clary Sage Oil: It is unclear just why clary sage is indicated for hair loss, however its historical uses may provide some answers. Clary sage essential oil is thought to have numerous benefits on the various hormone production processes within the body. While speculative at best, this might be one reason why it is important amongst essential oils for hair loss, since changes in hormones may be an underlying cause of the problem.
